Probabilistic Fast Downward (probFD) is an extension of the Fast Downward planning system (release 23.06) for fully observable probabilistic planning domains.

The problem description language assumed by probFD is PPDDL.
probFD supports a variety of different search algorithms for Generalized Stochastic Shortest-Path Problems (GSSPs), for example:
- Topological Value Iteration
- i-Dual and i²-Dual
- Labelled real-time dynamic programming (LRTDP)
- Improved LAO* (iLAO*)
To handle zero-reward cycles, probFD implements both end component decomposition and the FRET framework to eliminate these cycles and to guarantee convergence of the algorithms against the optimal value function. As a special case in the GSSP framework, probFD also supports MaxProb analysis.
The planner currently implements the following families of heuristics:
- Determinization-based heuristics by usage of a classical heuristic on the all-outcomes determinization.
- Occupation measure heuristics: The regrouped operator counting heuristic hroc and the projection occupation measure heuristic hpom
- Pattern database heuristics for SSPs. Multiple pattern generators are supported, including classical pattern generators that operator on the all-outcomes determinization, as well as adaptations of the CEGAR and hillclimbing pattern generation algorithms for probabilistic planning tasks. Notably also supports unavoidable dead-ends and zero-reward cycles.

We test LP support with CPLEX 22.1.1 and SoPlex 6.0.3+. On Ubuntu we test both CPLEX and SoPlex. On Windows we currently only test CPLEX, and on macOS we do not test LP solvers (yet).

The current version of Fast Downward is the merger of three different projects:
- the original version of Fast Downward developed by Malte Helmert and Silvia Richter
- LAMA, developed by Silvia Richter and Matthias Westphal based on the original Fast Downward
- FD-Tech, a modified version of Fast Downward developed by Erez Karpas and Michael Katz based on the original code
In addition to these three main sources, the codebase incorporates code and features from numerous branches of the Fast Downward codebase developed for various research papers. The main contributors to these branches are Malte Helmert, Gabi Röger and Silvia Richter.
