Checking blastdb error

Thanks for your help @mkandziora
I am still working through the wiki. I've downloaded and decompressed the nt* files. When I go to check if things work I get:
$ blastdbcmd -db nt -info
BLAST Database error: Error: Not a valid version 4 database.
I did this within the directory of the decompressed files (which I named blastdb
), as the wiki did not instruct to move outside. When I try it from one directory higher I get:
$ blastdbcmd -db blastdb -info
BLAST Database error: No alias or index file found for nucleotide database [blastdb] in search path [/home/josephwb/Downloads/PhylUp::]
I am certainly doing something silly. Do you know what is going on?
Thanks.

Hrm I believe this is because the version of blast+ available from Ubuntu is too low. Trying to get a newer version now.

Ok, I think that was my problem.
